New Year's Resolutions

I've been thinking a lot about New Year's Resolutions.  I don't usually set resolutions.  I fail at plenty of things and I don't need to give myself one more thing to fail at.  Last year I did set a resolution though.  You can read about it here.  Anyone want to wager on this one?  You'd think that would be an easy one to achieve, but this one too was an utter failure.

So here we are a year later and trying to decide what resolutions, if any, to set for this next year.  I have put a lot of thought into this and I have come to a conclusion.  If I don't set any goals for myself, I will make no forward progress.  If I set some goals for myself, even if I don't accomplish them 100%, I am better off than not doing them at all.

So, here are my resolutions:

1.  Strengthen relations with extended family.  We have decided to give Skype a try.  Technology is such a fabulous thing.  Why not use it for good?!

2.  Take tons of pictures of my girls.  I am coming to the realization that they are growing up WAY too fast and before long they won't be home to take pictures of them.  I find myself getting so caught up in the moments that I don't remember to take the pictures.  However, in a few years, these pictures will be fantastic to have.

3.  Update my blog weekly.  If I'm taking tons of pictures, I really should save the stories behind these pictures.  I didn't realize how many pictures I do have until I copied them from the old computer to the new computer.  Over 6000!  However, many of them have lost the story behind them.  I'm sure there was a reason to take them, but who remembers now?  Not me!

4.  Read, read, read.  I generally don't enjoy reading.  However, I know that it is important to increase my knowledge.  I have a lot of personal, professional, and spiritual things to learn.  Reading is the key to opening some doors for myself.

 5.  Improve my relationship with Jesus Christ.  This will be a daily task.  I need to make my scripture study and prayer more meaningful.  I need to come to know Him as more than my Savior, but as my personal friend.  I love this picture.  I so look forward to the day that I can hug my Savior and friend and thank him for all He has done for me!

Am I going to accomplish any of these goals to the level that I need to?  Absolutely NOT!  Will I make progress this next year?  YES!  Will I be a better person next year for the progress I make this year?  ABSOLUTELY!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

The need to simplify through the Savior

In our last house, I decorated three different rooms with three different holiday themes (trees and all), snowmen in the dining room, Santas in the family room, and nativities in the living room.  My current home doesn't have a living room and our dining room doesn't have much decorating room, thanks to a seminary sized table.  All decorating must happen in the family room.  The last 3 years I have put up all three themes in the family room.  This year, I wasn’t feeling the Santas and the snowmen.  I just wanted my nativities. I just feel the need to be surrounded by Christ more. Yesterday when we sorted through the Christmas things, I left the Santas and snowmen in the attic and brought out the Nativities.  The decorations are much simpler this year.  There is only 1 Christmas tree in the main area of the home.  (The girls still have their trees in their room)  The Christmas theme is much more simple and not “in your face”.  Reminds me of a conference address by L. Tom Perry in October 2008 in which he says, “In our search to obtain relief from the stresses of life, may we earnestly seek ways to simplify our lives.”  We don’t need anything but the Savior.  This year, I have beautiful reminders of the Savior surrounding me that will add joy to my life this Thanksgiving and Christmas season.

Simplicity.

Isn't this what Christmas is really about.

Love this one because it's easy to set up.  It's all glued together into one piece.

When Addyson was younger, she wouldn't leave my nativities alone. When I found this one a few years later, I had to buy it. Even though she doesn't play with it, MANY visiting friends have.

This is the set I always let my kids play with.  Hours of entertainment.

Found this sweet nativity at a flea market.  Other children had loved it for years and so have my children.  Made of indestructible wood.

Love the children dressed up as the nativity.  Reminds me of the pictures I see from my husband's family when they re-enacted the nativity with a different baby Jesus each year.

This Precious Moment Nativity is so unique.

We decided yesterday this will become a year round staple on our Piano.

Our first nativity.  Given to us as a wedding present.

Love was born on Christmas morn.

Peace - Isn't that what life is all about?

Phew . . All is Well!

Yesterday we got a call from the school nurse that we needed to come and get Jessica right away.  She recommended that we take her to the ER, or at least an eye doctor right away.  Marty could sense the urgency in her voice as she explained that one of Jessica's eyes was completely dilated.  Marty wasn't in a position to go and get her so I left work to pick her up.

I have never seen anything like it before.  I wish I could have taken a picture, but not sure it would have worked.  Her left eye was so dilated you could barely see the color.  She had one green eye and one black eye.

Marty set her a doctor's appointment while I brought her home.  When I got home, I did what any crazy mother would do.  I googled, "one eye dilation"  On the first page listed it says,

"If just one pupil is larger than the other, see the doctor immediately, says Dr. Slakter. "This is a case where a matter of an hour or two could save your life," he says. "

Not the best thing for a mama to read.  So, what do I do, keep reading.

"a single dilated pupil could indicate a brain injury, stroke or tumor"

Excellent - my daughter's life will be forever changed.  I keep reading.

"If only one pupil is dilated, you may have Adie's syndrome, a condition in which one pupil contracts more slowly than the other in response to light. It's usually caused either by a malfunction in the mechanism that controls the dilation reflex or from a harmless inflammation of the eye nerves. "

Okay, I had diagnosed Jessica.  She must have Adie's syndrome from spending too much time fighting with Addyson :)

I headed off to work waiting for the results from the eye doctor.  I was convinced they were going to find an infection in the eye nerve, prescribe some drops and we would be good to go.  The call came, the eye doctor couldn't find anything wrong with the eye.  She too was very concerned.  She recommended we get a neurological exam right away.  By this point in the day, there were no appointments to be had.  We were scheduled for this morning.

Off to work I went, with my mind and heart still at home with Jessica.  All morning I waited, and waited for the call to come.  Finally, I heard back from Marty.  Thankfully the diagnosis is migraine headache.

Migraines manifest themselves differently in different people.  Most people think of migraines as crippling painful headaches.  There are other ways that they can manifest.  Some people have stroke like symptoms including slurred speech and paralysis.  Others have a strong sensitivity to light, sound, or smell.  Jessica's manifest with dilated pupils and very heightened senses.  There is an accompanying headache, but she is able to function through it (for the most part)

She has suffered from headaches for several years.  They got better when she got glasses last year.  We thought that was the answer.  This is the first time we have noticed the dilation of the eyes, but now we know that is one of the first signs and we need to start treating her right away.

Migraines isn't a great diagnosis, but it sure beats a brain tumor!

She's working hard for the money!

She's all grown up!

Addyson has had several callings before in the YW organization, but yesterday was different.  She was called as the assistant branch organist.  When did my little girl get old enough to have a branch calling?  They set her apart as the Laurel president and the organist at the same time.  I am so proud of her.  She has worked so hard to learn to play the organ.  Her skills have progressed so much.  I know they will continue to get stronger as she practices and plays in sacrament meeting.

Thank you Cori and President Jarvis for not letting her age stand in the way of this great blessing.

Last Sunday I had tickets to fly to Las Vegas at 7:30 pm. I was to have landed in Vegas at 8:30 pm. I got a hotel room and was to spend a great evening with my husband. That was not in the cards. There was a mechanical issue with the plane and that plane would not be going to Vegas. I was fearful that Allegiant would just cancel the flight and I wouldn’t be able to meet up with my family for the family reunion. Thankfully they found another plane to come and make the flight but they had to bring it in from Vegas. Our flight didn’t leave until nearly 1:00 am and didn’t land in Vegas until 2:00 am. That is 4:00 am Arkansas time. By the time I got to the hotel, I was EXHAUSTED! Thankfully Marty still met me at the airport and we were able to enjoy our much shorter Vegas trip. I am grateful that I was able to fly to the family reunion, but I do hope for a much smoother trip home.

Am I alone?

I have a small little obsession.  It's a funny one that most no one would guess about me.  I absolutely love to collect recipes.  Some may ask why that is a funny obsession.  Well, it's because I hardly ever cook.  But when I do cook, I  LOVE it.

I find that I gather recipes via email.  Enough that I have a folder in my email dedicated to recipes.

I love to browse websites and dream of making delicious food.  I also have a folder in my web browser for recipes.  I even started my own recipe blog.

I gather recipes on small sheets of paper, Relief Society handouts, magazines, notebooks, recipe books, backs of envelopes, etc.  Well, I am tired of all this loose stuff everywhere.  It is time to get organized.

I decided with the great back to school sales going on right now, it was time to get organized.  Two inch binder, sheet protectors plus some tabs and I am set.

Now I feel totally organized.  Now, what should I cook?

We are life savers!

Jessica & Rylee went for a walk this morning.  On their way back, they noticed 2 baby birds laying in the grass with a broken nest next to them.  They were extremely upset and insistent that we needed to save these babies lives.

I told the girls to leave the birds alone because if they touched the babies, the momma wouldn't come back.  I came inside and googled what to do in this situation.  I wasn't sure how to take care of these babies.  I found out that the best thing to do is return the nest to it's spot in the tree and place the babies in the tree.  The mama will return when she hears them cry out for food.  It is a myth that she won't come back if humans touch her nest or babies.  I also found out that if the nest is destroyed, you can make your own nest out of a plastic container.  So out we went.

Jessica tried to get the babies back into the nest, but the nest was too little after the damage it had received.  So off I went to find a plastic container for the babies new home.

We placed the remains of the nest in the bottom and placed the birds inside.

Now there are two happy baby birds making lots of noise in the front yard.

Blog Worthy Event

I don't want to be a totally embarrassing parent, but I do want to document this moment.  Addyson went on her first official date last night.  Jordan Conover picked her up and took her to the elementary school.  They swung on the swings, played tether ball and then went and got drinks at Sonic.

I was out mowing the lawn when Jordan came to the house.  I didn't realize that they were headed out for the evening.  Addyson had cleared it with her dad, but no one clued me in.  They were probably afraid I'd try to take their picture leaving or something.  Not that I would have remembered to do something like that, but if I had, it would have totally embarrassed both Addyson & Jordan.

Not sure I am ready for the dating scene for my daughter, but I am very grateful for the good friends that she has.  She has high standards and holds her friends to those same high standards.  I look forward to the fun adventures she will get to undertake over the next few years.  Seems like just yesterday she was a babe in my arms, and now she's a babe in boys arms :)

Visiting Teaching

As the visiting teaching coordinator in the branch, I hear a lot of reasons why visiting teaching doesn't or can't get done.  Today I sent out the following email to all the sisters:

Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed their July 4th celebrations as much as I did. Summer seems to be a busy time. Vacations, family reunions, amusement park trips, keeping cool by the pool and other fun activities keep us extra busy. Scheduling visiting teaching visits can be very difficult, especially if you are 1000 miles away from each other or going 100 miles per hour. For this reason, I have compiled a few easy ways to ensure that your visiting teaching sisters know they are loved and thought about during this time.

  • send an email with your testimony
  • send a weekly text message letting them know you are thinking about them
  • water their plants while they are gone (much appreciated when they are on an extended vacation)
  • weed their garden
  • mow their lawn while they are gone (what a fun surprise when they get home)
  • call just to chat and check in on them
  • pray for them every day
  • drop off popsicles for the kids
  • meet up at the splash park (free relief from the summer heat)
  • have a picnic lunch
  • do your weekly grocery shopping together (share coupons give you bonus points)
  • mail a note on cute stationary (I found some at Walmart shaped like flip-flops)
  • meet for ice-cream
  • set up a traditional 30 minute visit

If you have others, please share with us. Together we will support, strengthen, and love each other. Thanks for all you do!

I have been thinking a lot about the "errand of angels" that visiting teaching can be.  I am reaching out to all my cyber-friends (both in and out of my local area) to help me improve this list of some of the fun ways that you have completed your visiting teaching, even at the busiest times of your life.  Let's discuss!

Addyson's party

It is entirely too late to create a blog of Addyson's party tonight.  I will just say that she has some amazing friends and they all had a great time!  I am so blessed to be the mom of an amazing young woman.  I can't believe how quickly she has grown up.

I did upload all her party pictures to facebook.  If you would like to take a peak at them, they are visible here.

Love you Addyson!  You ROCK!

A preview

Tomorrow is Addyson's Sweet Sixteen party.  For the record, I am NOT old enough to have a 16 year old.  She really wanted a fondant cake.  She selected the cake from here.  We tweeked it a bit and made it our own.  Here's a sneak peak at our adventure.

Rolling out the fondant! (Probably should have changed out of my work clothes first.
Mixing color into the fondant. Pink & Black.

Stars & Stripes!

These are the decorations that will go on top after we transport to the party.  Pretty cute!  Can't wait for tomorrow!

Finally following the counsel of the prophet!

I have had a song running through my head of the many counsels from President Kimball.  I can remember the tune quite well, but not all the words.  All I remember is "plant a garden, keep a journal . . .  be a missionary . . . "  This song keeps coming back to my mind.  Perhaps since this is all that I can remember, these are the 3 things the Lord would have me work on.  So, I'm taking them one at a time.

Since January I have felt strongly that I wanted to have a garden this year.  Now let me say, I know little, NOTHING about gardening!  We talked about where would be a good place to plant.  We really don't have a good spot in our yard.  Almost our entire yard is shaded all day by either our own home, or the home behind us.  Like I said, I know little, NOTHING, but I am pretty sure plants need sun.

A couple months later it was announced that our stake was going to take land adjacent to our chapel and divide it into family garden plots for anyone that wanted it.  YAHOO!  An answer to my prayers.  I think the Lord had to prepare me for months for the idea, or I never would have given it a second thought when the announcement was made in church.

Because I know little, NOTHING about gardening, I went to the best source I could think of for advice, Bishop Isabell.  Those Isabell's know how to garden.  In fact, his dad is the Stake Farm director.  He gave me two pieces of advice:

1.  Set your expectations low - SERIOUSLY!  That was his first piece of advice.  He said as a first time gardener, I shouldn't expect to be able to have my entire year supply in my garden.  Okay, that makes total sense.  Keep it simple.  Let's do a small garden, enjoy any little bits we get from it, and use this as a year of learning.

2.  Use the garden to strengthen the family.  WOW!  I hadn't even thought of that aspect.  He said that he taught his kids some great lessons while working as a family together in the garden.

So, with those two pieces of advise, our garden adventures began.  I told that girls that I wanted the garden put in as my Mother's Day gift.  So, the Saturday before Mother's Day, we headed out to till and plant our garden.  I think we hauled out 5 or 6 wheel barrows of rocks.

In my normal fashion, I totally forgot my camera.  However, Rylee saved the day by taking pictures with her phone.  I promise she was a helper too, but just behind the camera for a few moments.

So, HOW did I get the full wheelbarrow and Marty get the empty one?  In fairness. he took WAY more loads of rocks out than I did, plus he did all the tilling.

We have been going back to check on our little garden several times a week.  We have had A LOT of rain over the past few weeks.  We have yet to have to water.  We went over tonight for a two week visit and we are making progress.  We have carrots, beans, peas, several varieties of tomatoes & peppers, cucumbers, watermelon, cantalope, & pumpkins.  One of our mounds of watermelons never sprouted, so we went and bought squash today to put there instead.  We also decided to add a row of onions because we had a bit of room in one section to do that.  They are planted a bit late, but hopefully they will do okay.

Below are pictures of our tiny little plants.  We feel so successful already.

I believe this is a picture of our peas:

One of our many tomato plants:
This is hard to see, but these will be carrots:  Looks like we'll have some thinning to do.

Can't wait to eat the yummy green beans:

Now this is the funny one:

Now, I know right now it doesn't look too funny, but in October it will.  We bought the wrong kind of pumpkin seeds.  By this fall, it will look like this:

The package says the pumpkins grow to be 6 feet tall and well over 100 lbs.  Of course I discover this AFTER we have planted them.  If for some reason our NON-existant gardening skills produce these giant pumpkins, it will make a great backdrop for pictures at the church fall festival!

Our whole family has been excited to work in the garden and are looking forward to eating at least a little bit of what we grow.  I hope our enthusiasm keeps strong in July when it's 100 degrees and 98% humidity!
